Normally, laser printers cost less to own and operate, but for low volume use, that may not be accurate.
I compared six models of color multifunction devices to see which one was most cost effective. The comparison was based on an average of 500 color pages per month and a total life span of four years. The winner was the HP OfficeJet Pro L7600 at 6 cents per page. Compare that to an average of 17 cents per page for lasers.
Why did that surprise me? It surprised me because I always recommend laser based machines over inkjet machines. The difference is that laser machines use toner and inkjet machines use ink. Toner is generally less expensive than ink. However, ink may smear if it gets wet and may also require more expensive paper.
